2010-2011 WMYS Auditions

 

Auditions for the WMYS 2010-2011 season will be held on Thursday, September 2, beginning at 5:00pm

The WMYS Mission:

The mission of the West Michigan Youth Symphony (WMYS) is to provide musical training through challenging orchestra performance experiences that complement school and community music programs in West Michigan. The WMYS is committed to nurturing young musicians (6th grade through sophomore in college) with creative and unique performance and educational opportunities not otherwise available to them.

The WMYS is part of the West Michigan Symphony. The Youth Symphony comprises 60-70 young musicians from over 20 area schools as well as home school students.


 

WMYS Music Director Dan Meyers

In addition to directing the WMYS, Daniel M. Meyers is a Professor of Music at West Shore Community College (WSCC) and Chair of the Arts and Humanities department.   In his thirteen year tenure at WSCC, he has served as director of the music department, and founder of the concert and jazz bands. Degrees earned include a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan with a conducting emphasis, and a Master of Arts from Central Michigan University. Meyers is an active guest lecturer and clinician throughout the state of Michigan and guest conductor in several regions of the U.S. Meyers is a native if Manistee and recently moved to Norton Shores where he resides with his wife Melissa, who is a professional cellist and director of the Grand Haven High School Orchestras, and their one year old daughter Danielle. As a former resident of Mason County, Dan has worked on numerous community development projects and served on several advisory committees, and community boards.

 

 

 


 

For Youth Orchestra Members:

Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings 6:00-8:30 p.m, September through April at Muskegon Community College.
Concerts are scheduled for November 21, 2010 and March 20, 2011.
The first WMYS rehearsal will be Tuesday, September 7, 2010 from 6:15-8:45pm

  • Eligible Students may earn college credit from Muskegon Community College as a member.
  • All WMYS members receive a West Michigan Symphony ID card allowing them to attend any WMS regularly scheduled concert for FREE during the WMS concert season.

WMYS Study Grants 

West Michigan Youth Symphony Study Grants are available for current WMYS members

Study grants may be used to help pay for music camps, lessons, and instrument purchase or rental.

Deadline was February 16, 2010 to apply.  Please call us if you would like to be considered in the future.
