THE WEST SHORE YOUTH SYMPHONY 

The mission of the West Shore Youth Symphony (WSYS) is to provide musical training through challenging orchestra performance experiences that complement school and community music programs in West Michigan. The WSYS is committed to nurturing young musicians (6th grade through sophomore in college) with creative and unique performance and educational opportunities not otherwise available to them.

The WSYS is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and operates in partnership with the West Shore Symphony Orchestra and Muskegon Community College. The Youth Symphony comprises 60-70 young musicians from over 20 area schools as well as home school students.

Student Information

Auditions are held each May for the following season.

Rehearsals take place from September to May on a weekly basis. College credit through Muskegon Community College is available for eligible students.

WSYS Music Director Dan Meyers

In addition to directing the WSYS, Daniel M. Meyers is a Professor of Music at West Shore Community College (WSCC) and Chair of the Arts and Humanities department. In his thirteen year tenure at WSCC, he has served as director of the music department, and founder of the concert and jazz bands. Degrees earned include a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan with a conducting emphasis, and a Master of Arts from Central Michigan University. Meyers is an active guest lecturer and clinician throughout the state of Michigan and guest conductor in several regions of the U.S. Meyers is a native if Manistee and recently moved to Norton Shores where he resides with his wife Melissa, who is a professional cellist and director of the Grand Haven High School Orchestras, and their one year old daughter Danielle. As a former resident of Mason County, Dan has worked on numerous community development projects and served on several advisory committees, and community boards.
